Angry Mob ‘Calls For Tourist To Be Sacrificed’ After She Climbs Ancient Pyramid

An angry mob ‘called for a tourist to be sacrificed’ after she climbed an ancient pyramid.

The pyramid called El Castillo stands tall at the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá, which is located in the Yucatán region of Mexico.

Every year, many tourists visit this place, which is thought to have been built around the early 400s A.D., according to History.com.

Since 2008, people have not been allowed to climb the old building to help keep it safe and make sure future generations can enjoy it, according to Merco Press.

To stop people from ignoring this rule, there are fines that go from $2,558 all the way up to an incredible $5,115.

But this consequence didn’t stop one woman from climbing the Mesoamerican step pyramid.

After seeing the viral video of the unknown woman climbing the historic site, one person said, “That’s really disrespectful.”

Another added: “I instantly feel happy that everyone there wasn’t having it and rightfully booed her off.”

“Y’all legit don’t disrespect people’s cultures in other countries,” a third person remarked.

Somebody else said: “She should be fined for climbing it.”

A fifth person wrote: “They should have put her in jail… the disrespect.”

When a video of a woman climbing the pyramid went viral on TikTok, it made a lot of people really angry.

In the video, she shows off her dance moves and strikes a pose when she gets to the top, but then a security guard comes and leads her back down.

According to Merco Press, people watching shouted words like “jail” and “sacrifice.” Sky News also mentioned that some individuals grabbed her hair, pushed her, and splashed her with water when she returned from the top of the pyramid.

The Tinum Municipal Police arrested the woman and gave her a fine based on Article 55 of the Federal Law that protects Archaeological, Artistic, and Historical Monuments, as reported by Riviera Maya News.

The fine amount has not been disclosed.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) released a statement to The Independent.

The translation from the publication says that the tourist didn’t harm El Castillo at all.

The message says: “The person was told why climbing the pyramid structures is not allowed, and this information was given to the Secretariat of Public Security of the State of Yucatán, so they can take the necessary actions.”

It also mentions that visitors need to follow the rules that have been established.

The woman without a name isn’t the only visitor who has climbed the pyramid and dealt with angry locals.

A new video is making the rounds online, showing a man being led down the steps of a pyramid while a furious crowd waits for him.

A guy watching, who was only wearing shorts and sandals, hit the tourist on the back of the head with a stick.

Daniel Fretwell, who saw what happened, told the Metro about the situation: “I could hear and see around 30 or 40 people yelling ‘No, no, come down, don’t do it, no.’ People were whistling to get the man’s attention, trying to show him that he was making a mistake.”

The tourist was reportedly fined 5,000 pesos ($265) and held in custody for around 12 hours.

It is thought that he informed the authorities he went into the restricted area to snap pictures for his social media.
