Discover the haunting tale of the ‘Alaska Triangle,’ a mysterious region where over 20,000 individuals have mysteriously disappeared.

It makes the Bermuda Triangle sound like a walk in the park

It’s strange, but there seems to be a common idea about triangular areas all over the globe where people who enter them mysteriously disappear and are never found again.

We’ve all heard the stories about the Bermuda Triangle, where tons of planes and ships have vanished without a trace, and we should definitely stay away from it. But did you know there’s a place in Alaska that we should also be careful about?

Even though there are said to be around 20,000 disappearances in the ‘Alaska Triangle,’ it doesn’t get nearly as much attention as its famous counterpart in the North Atlantic Ocean. But honestly, it deserves more discussion!

It’s kind of described as a wild area located between Utqiagvik, Anchorage, and Juneau, and you probably shouldn’t go there unless you’re really into ghosting adventures.

The History Channel says that this spooky area has more mysterious missing person cases than any other place on Earth, with around 20,000 people disappearing in the triangle since the early 1970s.

I think you can see why we’re not suggesting that you plan a short trip there.

What makes that figure even more stranger is just how small the population in the region which has been dubbed ‘Alaska’s Bermuda Triangle’ is.

Ken Gerhard, an American cryptozoologist and field researcher, has done a lot of research in the area and feels really uneasy about the mysterious disappearances that have happened there without any clear reason.

While talking to the History Channel, he shared, “During my research in the Alaskan Triangle, I discovered that many of the missing person cases really couldn’t be figured out.”

“This wasn’t just a case of someone being mauled by a bear or falling into a crevasse, I mean, these were often people that were going about their daily lives.

“They weren’t out on some grand adventure and yet ultimately, they disappeared for no good reason.”

Chillingly, Gerhard explained that two people disappeared – one off a ‘cruise ship’ and another in a ‘crowded tourist area on top of a mountain’ – while he and his team were actually there.

The Alaska Triangle became known as a mysterious area in 1972 when a small airplane vanished without a trace while flying from Anchorage to Juneau.

Three people – US House Majority Leader Thomas Hale Boggs Sr, Alaska Congressman Nick Begich, his aide Russel Brown – were on board alongside the pilot when it suddenly disappeared.

Even though search teams worked really hard for over 3,600 hours and covered a huge area of 325,000 square miles, they couldn’t find the missing travelers or their plane.

This event clearly sparked many conspiracy theories since two well-known political figures were part of it, but their disappearance is still a mystery. The same goes for the other 19,996 people who bravely faced the Alaska Triangle.

It looks like the huge area is filled with rough mountain ranges and wild nature, but the weather is super cold. According to IFLScience, it seems like surviving out there would be really tough.

Plus, there are tons of bears wandering around, not to forget the millions of lakes, endless cracks in the ground, and huge valleys they might come across.

However, not every disappearance in the Alaska Triangle has gone unsolved.

In the mid-1970s, a man named Gary Frank Sotherden from New York disappeared while he was out hunting in the wilds of Alaska.

His brother said that their family couldn’t really move on because they never figured out what happened to him. They always held onto the hope that he might still be alive somewhere.

After more than forty years, during which Gary’s parents died without ever learning what happened to their son, a big discovery was finally made.

A human skull was found by the Porcupine River in northeastern Alaska, and in 2022, scientists managed to extract DNA from it. Later, it was confirmed that the skull belonged to a person named Gary.

Tim DeSpain, a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers, mentioned to AP that the way the teeth marks looked on the skull suggested that the person was attacked by a bear.

Even though the official reason for the man’s death in the US hasn’t been confirmed, his brother thinks it probably happened because a bear attacked him.

All in all, it sounds like a place which is best left alone.
