Many people can’t tell these apart, but it’s super important.

Have you ever thought about how the size of a spice tin can really matter? Some well-known spice brands, such as McCormick & Co., are facing lawsuits because of the size of their ground pepper containers.

A little company named Watkins Inc. claims that McCormick has cut the amount of pepper in their containers by 25% while keeping the size of the containers unchanged. This means that even though the containers appear the same, you are actually receiving less pepper.

So, why is this important? It’s all about being fair and honest. Watkins claims that McCormick is fooling customers into believing they’re getting more pepper in each container than they actually are. Since McCormick’s containers are difficult to see through, you can’t really know how much pepper is inside. On the other hand, Watkins offers smaller containers that have the same amount of pepper as McCormick’s.

Watkins claims that McCormick is trying to fool customers into thinking their product is superior to others. They believe that instead of improving their product, McCormick is relying on sneaky packaging. Even though the labels on McCormick’s tins say they have 6 ounces of pepper, the print is tiny and difficult to see at first glance.

This sneaky move, known as “slack-filling,” is considered unfair and goes against rules meant to keep consumers safe. McCormick isn’t providing as much pepper as customers believe because their containers aren’t completely full. This not only impacts the value for your money but also makes it tough to compare different products properly.

So, when you’re at the store buying spices, look closely at the package. Don’t be fooled by the size of the tin—what’s in it is what counts!
