“I had an angel,” Anne Hathaway said of Christopher Nolan

Anne Hathaway recently discussed the significant backlash she faced on the internet following her Oscar win in 2013, an experience that nearly jeopardized her career.

The American actress has expressed her gratitude to Christopher Nolan for his unwavering support during a time when her online reputation was adversely affected by the “Hathahate” backlash from Hollywood.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Anne Hathaway reflected on her experience co-hosting the 2013 Academy Awards and winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Les Misérables, noting that it ultimately impacted her opportunities for future film roles.

The viral online backlash known as “Hathahate” characterized her identity as “toxic” and “annoying” by certain individuals, coinciding with a significant increase in her visibility and popularity.

The 41-year-old actress reflected, “Many individuals were reluctant to offer me roles due to their apprehensions regarding the toxicity that my online identity had developed.”

The actress from The Devil Wears Prada discussed how her casting by Christopher Nolan in the 2014 blockbuster film Interstellar played a crucial role in revitalizing her career.

She remarked, “I had an angel in Christopher Nolan,” emphasizing that he remained unfazed by the criticism. The actress commended him for providing her with one of the “most beautiful roles I’ve experienced in one of the finest films I’ve participated in.” She starred alongside Matthew McConaughey in the space epic.

The actress, who also appeared in Nolan’s 2012 film, The Dark Knight Rises, remarked, “I am uncertain whether he was aware that he was supporting me at that moment, but it certainly had that impact. My career maintained its momentum in a way that it might not have if he had not provided his support.”

Anne Hathaway next stars in Amazon Prime Video’s romance comedy film The Idea of You opposite Nicholas Galitzine.
